Canadian AI firm Cohere, which focuses on enterprise AI models, has just completed a $500 million funding round, led by Radical Ventures and Inovia Capital. Reaching a valuation of $6.8 billion, up from $5.5 billion last year, Cohere plans to use this new investment to create more innovative agentic AI solutions that support both private companies and governments to unlock more efficient ways of working.

“The company’s relentless focus on customers’ time to value, data privacy, and customization uniquely positions Cohere to lead the enterprise AI adoption, both at home and internationally. We’re proud to continue supporting them as they reshape the future of work,” explains Patrick Pichette, Partner at Inovia Capital, who will be joining Cohere’s Board of Directors.

Earlier this year, a tool for employees called North was released that offers a similar experience as ChatGPT for monotonous pieces of work like extracting ideas from documents. Cohere is clear that their approach is security-first and offers strong regulatory compliance and local data control. This investment comes at a time of increasing interest in AI-focused firms.

Several high-profile companies, including Oracle, Dell, RBC, Bell, Fujitsu, LG CNS, SAP and Ensemble Health Partners, work with Cohere to deliver efficiency solutions. Unlike its well-known rival firms like Anthropic and OpenAI, which target consumers, Cohere only focuses on the enterprise segment, enabling the startup to more judiciously invest in AI models that have a specific business purpose.

Two new additions will join the leadership team at Cohere as part of this next stage of growth. Former Vice President of AI Research at Meta, Joelle Pineau, is now Chief AI Officer, and former Uber CFO, Francois Chadwick, will join as Chief Financial Officer. Additional support from investors including AMD Ventures, NVIDIA, PSP Investments and Salesforce Ventures completed the investment round.
