GitOps for Everyone: How Non-Engineers Are Learning to Ship Safely

Once solely the domain of engineers, Git repositories are now increasingly of interest to all parts of an organisation, from product managers to data analysts and marketing specialists. The value of having a single source of truth when it comes to infrastructure cannot be understated, and it is for this reason why Git-based workflows are being used across companies.

Git workflows have long included non-engineers, but now more and more people not directly involved in the tech side are contributing and can play a vital role in the successful rollout of new products. Version control, pull requests, and continuous delivery pipelines are now being considered by cross-functional teams to make use of a shared operating system that enables secure delivery.

“Remember that non-code contributions like improving documentation, design, or community support are just as valuable as code contributions, and often have a lower barrier to entry,” explained GitHub.

In practice, a single feature being launched will not just include code but also documentation, new marketing assets and user interface adjustments, further showing the value of using Git as the single source of truth. The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) 2024 report found that 77% of respondents said some, much or nearly all of their deployment practices and tools adhere to GitOps principles.

Automation and Adoption Drive the Next GitOps Wave

There is no question that factors like the growing usage of CI/CD in production and the constant pressure to deploy multiple times a day are leading many companies to reconsider how to increase deployment times and embed automation throughout the entire process. Another finding from the CNCF showed that almost a third of teams have adopted GitOps over the past 12 months, helping normalise its usage and simplifying joining the workflow without the need to start from scratch.

“The cloud native landscape is constantly evolving, especially as we hit a decade of CNCF,” said Chris Aniszczyk, CTO of the CNCF. “Organisations are facing cultural and operational hurdles as they scale adoption. Security remains vital, but the focus has shifted to automation and best practices that enable faster, more reliable software delivery. Companies prioritising both technical and cultural transformation will gain a competitive edge.”

Collaboration and Accountability Beyond Code

No matter what the project, the focus of transparency, review and accountability is perhaps the strongest argument for embracing GitOps. Just because staff in different job functions are shifting to GitOps, it does not mean that they are expected to turn into developers, but rather will add to the collaboration with other team members.

While not yet the universal workspace where product teams come together, GitOps has shown great promise in supporting diverse teams shipped together in an effective way that does not sacrifice quality for speed.
