Head of Labs



James is pushing forward state of the art open data technology, leading the ODI’s Labs programme and software team which delivers software projects across the ODI. He is passionate about using web technology and open data to make a better future for everyone, with a particular focus on creating environmental and social benefits.

James has been a software developer for over 17 years working in a variety of industries including biometrics, flight simulation and visual effects. Before the ODI, James worked as a lead developer and platform evangelist at AMEE, creating the world’s first natural language carbon calculator.

In his spare time, he is an organiser of community group Cleanweb UK, that inspires developers to solve sustainability problems using the web. In 2015 James stood in the UK general election, setting up Something New, a political party based on open democracy with open data at its core.
