Shafi is a practising surgeon at The Royal London and St Bartholomew’s hospitals as a colorectal cancer surgeon. He is a passionate educator and is the Associate Dean of Bart’s medical school and he was awarded the Silver Scalpel award in 2015 as the best national trainer in surgery by the Association of Surgeons in Training. He has been elected a member of council for the prestigous Royal College of Surgeons of England and sits on a number of advisory panels for government.

He is a self-confessed gadget freak and is looking at ways of introducing wearables into clinical practice and his mission is to provide affordable and accessible surgical training to anyone and everyone using the power of connectivity to allow equitable surgical care.

He made world headline news in 2014 by steaming a live operation using Google Glass to 14000 students and trainees across 132 countries. He is a consultant and advisor for Advance Mobile Applications to develop Google glass for telemedicine and telementoring. He has founded two companies: Virtual Medics which is a class leading eplatform using wearables to facilitate medical education and Medical Realties who are developing an exciting Virtual Reality platform for surgical training called the Virtual Surgeon.
